Sulzer Hip Replacement Recall

Medical malpractice usually occurs as a result of a number of reasons mainly stemming from negligence by a doctor, pharmacists, or even manufacturers of medical products and equipment.

A recent case demonstrates how medical product manufacturers can also be at fault of wrongful death and medical malpractice.

In the United States approximately 310,000 Americans undergo full or partial hip replacement surgery each year. This population of patients commonly consists of the above 65 years age group, usually suffering from osteoarthritis. As our population continues to age the need for surgery will continue to escalate. Basically, a hip replacement involves replacing your natural hip with a mechanical replacement comprising of a ball and socket joint. Today, a typical hip replacement surgery will cost approximately $20,000 - $50,000. In 2000, many hip replacement patients complained of incessant pain while recovering from their surgery of hip implants manufactured by Sulzer Orthopedics of Austin, Texas.

As a result of this Sulzer Orthopedics initialized a recall off approximately 30,000 plus hip replacement, 17,000 of which had already been implanted. This mechanical failure arose due to defective manufacturing. The orthopedic equipment became contaminated with 4 possible machine oil made by Mobil Oil Co. This residue inhibited the bone growth necessary for the bonding process between the pelvic bone and the orthopedic shell. Patients who were implanted with this defective product started experiencing intense pain and difficulties walking. As a result of these severe symptoms, many patients needed revision surgery with as much as 2,300 requiring the removal of the Sulzer implant.

Since the Sulzer hip recall, numerous lawsuits have been filed against Sulzer Orthopedics. A class action suit approved in 2002, outlined the Sulzer companies to pay out $1 billion in settlement to the victims. Additionally, Sulzer Orthopedics recommended that any surgeons who implanted their components from the recalled listing contact their patient and advise them accordingly on the potential symptoms.

Medical costs and damages can be recovered against the Sulzer Orthopedics Company for their wrongful mistake.
