Back And Spinal Cord Injuries

Back and spinal cord injuries can have devastating effects on a person’s life outside of work, usually with long-term consequences. In most instances, back and spinal cord injuries is usually the fault of another, whether it is the result of a negligent driver, due to a defective product or being on a dangerous property, when such an incident occurs, as a victim in a spinal cord injury, you may have a legal claim.

Spinal Cord 101

The spinal cord is a compilation of nerves, which travels from the bottom of the brain along your back. These nerves thereafter, run off and connect to your arms, legs, and other parts of your body. These nerves permit your brain to provide instructions to the muscles whereby effecting movements and mobility.

The spinal cord can however, be very susceptible to damage. It is unfortunately, unable to restore itself should it become damaged, unlike other parts of your body,

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is damage to the spinal cord, which usually results in the loss of mobility or sensation. Frequent causes of spinal cord trauma are a result of auto accidents, gunfire or violence or falls; or can be disease related, for example due to polio or even spina bifida.

Keep in mind the spinal cord does not have to be severely damaged for a failure of function to occur. In fact, most individuals with SCI, the spinal cord is still “intact”, but any impairment results in loss of mobility.

Signs and symptoms of back or spinal injury

Some of the more predominant signs and symptoms of back injury or spinal cord injury, especially after an accident includes:

  • Intense back pain or “heaviness” in your neck, head or back
  • Feeling of powerlessness, or paralysis to any part of your body
  • Lack of sensation or tingling in your hands, fingers, feet or toes
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control
  • Struggle with balancing and walking
  • Difficulty in breathing after injury
  • An abnormally positioned neck or back

Measures to use if you suspect a back or neck injury:

  • Immobilize the injured person — permanent paralysis and other serious complications may result if you move the injured person.
  • Call the local emergency medical assistance number or 911.
  • Place heavy towels on both sides of the neck to prevent any movement until emergency care arrives.
  • Provide basic first aid; make sure the person is calm, without moving the head or neck

In the United States there are approximately 450,000 people living with SCI. There is an added 10,000 new cases of SCI annually, the majority involving males between the age 16- 30 years old. Commonly, the majority of injures are due to motor vehicular accident, violence or work related falls due to someone negligence and carelessness. If you have been a victim off someone’s carelessness, which has resulted in back injury and or spinal injury, remember not to settle any claim until you have determined the severity of your injury. Seek immediate legal counseling as a settlement of any sort can hinder you from collecting any additional monies for your claim, especially if your situation worsens.

If you or a loved one has been injured due to someone poor maintenance and negligence, you may be entitled to monetary compensation for:
  • Medical & Hospitalization Bills
  • Cost of Medication
  • Specialized Testing due to Injury
  • Doctors’ follow-up visits
  • Property Damages
  • Loss of Earnings
  • Future Loss of Earnings
