Mesothelioma and Asbestos

At various points in our lives, we have all been exposed to asbestos via the air that we breathe, or from the water we drink; we can become exposed to natural deposits of material in the earth, or simply, we become exposed to the deterioration of asbestos products found commonly all around us. While the public at large may not get infected as a result of a microscopic exposure, studies have now shown that it is those individuals who have been employed in jobs where the exposure is more substantial that are now being diagnosed with asbestos related diseases. The most common diagnosed disease being mesothelioma.

There have also been documented cases of mesothelioma, resulting from lesser exposure, affecting the worker’s family members who came into contact with the asbestos, brought into the home via clothing, skin or hair. It is important to note that symptoms of any asbestos related disease are not always evident until many, many years after the exposure to material.

Defined by Wikipedia, “mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that develops from transformed cells originating in the mesothelium, which is the protective lining that covers many of the internal organs of the body. It is usually caused by exposure to asbestos. Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked in jobs where they inhaled asbestos, or were exposed to asbestos dust and fibers in other ways.”

Generally, when the asbestos fibers are released into the air and we inhale it or sometimes swallow it, these fibers will remain in our lungs indefinitely which thereafter causes the abnormality found in our organ cells. As a result many mesothelioma patients will experience shortness of breath and even chest pain. These symptoms are also usually associated with other less serious diseases, even pneumonia, so it is highly advisable when seeking medical attention for suspected asbestos related disease that your medical provider have the necessary expertise to make an informed diagnosis.

Working with asbestos is the leading cause for mesothelioma developing at a later time. The following industries and locations are noted for its’ high presence of asbestos, they include:

  • Asbestos manufacturing products – insulation, roofing and building materials
  • Automotive products- brakes and clutches
  • Construction Industry / Sand and abrasive manufacturers
  • Shipyard and builders
  • Power Plants / Oil Refineries
  • Steel Mills / Tile Cutters

Remember, exposure to asbestos for as little as one or two months can lead to mesothelioma, which usually becomes full blown within a 30 –50 years time frame.

Sadly, the symptoms of mesothelioma appears only 2-3 months prior to the cancer being diagnosed; and the overall prognosis becomes especially poor when verification of the disease is not completed in a timely manner. Patients suffering with mesothelioma have very limited survival time, approximately 6 – 12 months at best. Only less than 10% of patients have been known to survive 5 years or more. As a result, mesothelioma is now considered one of the deadliest forms of cancer known today.

Research today indicates that approximately 80 per cent of mesothelioma injuries are due to the direct exposure to asbestos. In fact, this toxic disease claims on average 3,000 lives annually, with the numbers alarmingly increasing. One known factor that makes this cancer deadly is that it is often mistaken for pneumonia since the symptoms are almost equal to that of mesothelioma. Unless the patient is subjected to a thorough medical examination, proper diagnosis cannot be determined.

Signs and Symptoms of mesothelioma include:

  • shortness of breath
  • chest or abdominal pain
  • coughing
  • difficulty in swallowing
  • blood in sputum coughed up from the lungs
  • significant weight loss

It is imperative that victims of this type of cancer be vigilant and requests the most effectual treatment option accessible to them. Additionally, this vigilance should also be extended towards their intentions to file a mesothelioma lawsuit against their employer and potentially against the manufacturers of the asbestos products they have been exposed to during their tenure of employment.
